Xvid Solutions has been established by the Xvid core engineers to trigger the further development of the popular Xvid video codec, to enhance the adoption and migration of Xvid also in professional environments and to improve the interoperability with consumer electronic devices by enforcing Xvid’s high quality standards.

Xvid Solutions is privately held and focuses on R&D, namely the development of its MPEG-4 AVC compression technology which is contributed to the Xvid project under the terms of the GNU GPL license. Xvid Solutions also offers a royalty-free product certification program to further trigger the deployment of Xvid compliant hardware and to provide guidance to consumers.

Being comprised of the Xvid core engineers, the key goals of Xvid Solutions are to drive further the development of the Xvid video codec, to enhance the Xvid brand awareness, to stimulate the creation of GPLed applications and to trigger the adoption of open standards.

Consequently, Xvid Solutions contributes its MPEG-4 software to the Xvid open-source project under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). The GPL is a non-exclusive software license that grants receivers a right to alter and redistribute a program provided modifications and derived works thereof are distributed as a whole under the terms of the GPL again.

The availability of the Xvid source code under GPL license offers ample advantages and has triggered the development of numerous related applications published under GPL as well. In result, the Xvid codec has e.g. become subject of various research projects and is used in university lectures all over the world.
