Technology
Xvid Solutions' expertise covers all important video compression standards ranging from MPEG-1, MPEG-2, H.263 over MPEG-4 Simple and Advanced Simple Profiles to H.264/AVC.
These compression standards have quite different application fields. Xvid Solutions provides highest-quality software solutions for all of them supporting also a wide range of hardware platforms at unrivalled performance.
MPEG-2
MPEG-2 Visual is an international standard specified in ISO 13818-2 and has become the format of choice in high-quality video broadcast and professional digital video applications.
MPEG-2 is a flexible standard providing high video quality at relatively low computational requirements for e.g. digital video broadcast like digital TV, cable TV or DVB-T, video storage like DVD or professional video editing applications.
H.263
H.263 is an ITU-T standard and targeted towards applications that require low-bitrate compression and real-time, low-delay transmission of digital video data.
H.263 Baseline is a standard providing good compression efficiency at relatively low computational complexity. Hence, H.263 is typically employed in video conferencing, video security or cellular phones. Its main advantages are simplicity and ease of maintenance in comparison to other video compression standards.
MPEG-4 Visual
MPEG-4 Visual is an international standard specified in ISO/IEC 14496-2. Most popular are the MPEG-4 simple profile (SP) and advanced simple profile (ASP) that have rapidly become the multimedia solution of choice for millions of video enthusiasts world-wide.
MPEG-4 enables the interoperable distribution of video content and provides a scalable and unified framework for a wide variety of different devices, e.g. PVRs, cell phones, PMPs, TV set-top boxes, DVD players and many more.
H.264/AVC
H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is the first joint video compression standard between the two big standard organizations ISO (MPEG-4 AVC) and ITU-T (H.264) since MPEG-2 and is rapidly gaining acceptance for all kind of digital video applications.
Due to the combined standardization effort, wide-spread adoption is predicted for H.264/AVC based applications and hardware devices. Already today a massive breakthrough of the H.264/AVC standard can be observed in literally all applications that deal with processing of digital video.
